passage door lock won"t work

Door lock on passage door won"t work. 2008 Equinox. Thought it was a actuator so I bought one. Went to replace it. Took off the door planel and the actuator doesn"t look like it"s the right one. For that matter it looks like nothing but a small thingy on the door with some control wires going to it. My question is where does the actuator go? I heard someone talking about a switch.
