We bought our 2018 new and I am very impressed with the drive train! I have gotten 58 mpg highway and normally get 35-43 mpg in city driving although The Twin Cities in Minnesota do have lots of freeway driving. Acceleration is good enough and so far at 42,000 miles very little in service problems. I did find out you do NOT want to idle the engine for more than 5 to 10 minutes. Even in our cold weather I just get in and turn on the seat heat and the steering wheel heat and the max defrost(electric boost heat) and then drive away! we do regular trips to visit family and it gives really great hi way mpg. Keeps telling me I can drive 800 miles or more on a tank of fuel! I do have one caution. Research revealed that you need to add one quart of Mobil 1 ESPx2 0w-20 to each oil change to extend the timing chain life due too it's position at the back of the engine next to the firewall. This will extend the life of the engine to 100,000 before any timing chain problems will occur. The only way to service it is to take the entire engine transmission unit out of the car. If it needs that service just have them do Everything it needs!
Thank you so much for your reply to my post and the good information on the timing chain issue. I am getting close to the 100k mark so will bring that up to my mechanic. I don't use the dealer I bought this from but a local GM truck dealer that used to be a Pontiac dealer. They are super guys and treat me well. That's the advantage of small community togetherness. I've known them for years and they take care of my GMC Sierra too. One other question that is puzzling the heck out of me: it appears my '18 Premier does not have a trip odometer in the DIC! I have tried everything to find it. Manual says it does. Do you know if certain vintages of the '18 left it out? Early vs Later? Diesel didn't have it maybe? I am happy to hear of the mileage you are getting but you live in the Northern US. I'm in Northern Indiana. I know our VW Jetta diesel always got better mileage when we traveled West and especially at higher elevation. Our first tank on the 'Nox came back at 37mpg. I'm trying different diesel brands to see if that effects it. I know it did on the VW. I used SeaFoam in it and that improved it. Happy and safe trails. Jeff
There are a couple of driving habits that really affect mpg. Do NOT accelerate hard. Do put the pedal to the floor. Full acceleration causes problems with the emissions system! This is turn cause the mileage to drop. The emissions system makes the engine run rich with more fuel to clean the intake manifold and other parts till the sensors tell the computer that it is clean again. Ask your mechanic to run a check to see if it ever had a code for emissions system carbon buildup. I had it happen cause I used to like to floor it and zoom but I learned my lesson! It ws covered under warranty but the mechanics explained how it works so now I rarely use full throttle. Other that that problem I have had NO problems with the drivetrain. I also use the 0W-20W oil and that seems to help with mpg. I just pulled into the garage from city driving with it saying 39.4 mpg! And that was lots of stop and go in construction zones today.
