DMV line or not?

Car I got has July plates but are expired. From 2024. DMV says I have to buy plates for 2026 if I want to drive today. And then buy 2027 plates on aug 1. So 2 yrs of plates. Or wait till aug 1 to do it and not have to buy 2026 plates. And title transfer.
