I have a 2020 Equinox with just over 80K miles on it. I have had several issues that have been fixed from the vacuum pump going out, the fuel injector solenoid and some other issues. These issues were resolved last year in April. Fast forward until now, I was driving to work the other day and had noticed around 40-50 mph that when I pressed on the gas pedal, it was sluggish to accelerate. When it finally did accelerate there was a clicking sound and big puff of white smoke. That only happened once but there was no check engine light or anything. I inched it back home because something didn't seem right. I have tried to drive it one other time and it did the same thing except no white smoke this time. Still no check engine light or codes. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

I'd have it checked for codes by a reliable garage (might cost less than the dealer). There are way too many things that could cause this, you need to nail it down thru searching for codes.

Like @ricklack said, given what you describe, it's all guess work.

I'd examine under the hood for obvious stuff like leaks, corroded battery posts and connections, check oil and coolant levels, etc. Check for loose charge air cooler clamps and check for a ruptured charge air cooler.

Run a full system scan.

This could be something as simple as a weak, failing battery, or could be a turbo on its way out.

My 2020 Equinox AWD 105K gave out on the EXPRESSWAY. The car drives smooth and quiet. Thank goodness, I don't tailgate otherwise it would have fatal. Warning light did not come on until after the vehicle was stopped by gradually slowing down on the edge of the road. No warning at all and no dashboard lights, for a part that is actually inexpensive that could have been added to the dealer suggested replacement checklist would have been nice; but that was not the case.

Often tough for a dealer to be able to predict what part, and when it will fail - unfortunately.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. How would you following someone too closely been fatal when your vehicle actually slowed down due to the engine stopping? Because of the power brake loss and a possible need to brake hard occurring at the same time?

The brakes don't stop working when the engine stops. It just takes more force on the brake pedal to stop and in a panic stop I would be pressing as hard as I could on the pedal, power brakes or not.

Can you share some details so that others can check their vehicles?

Which engine? The 1.5L or the 2.0L?
