2019 Equinox Diesel Rattle

Hey everyone!

I've had my 19 Equinox for a year now. I purchased it with around 100,000KMs and is now sitting at 138,000KMs.

I've noticed just recently that when I start the car in the morning I get a brief rattle for a second. I'm guessing something to do with the Cams & oil pressure? I don't have any codes, and I've changed my oil and filters every 5,000KMs since owning the car.

Youi must be in another country and I live in the USA so I"ll use miles. I have owned many diesels, trucks, tractors and cars. I now own a 2018 'Nox diesel. One thing you learn about Rudy Diesel's ingenious design is the type of combustion it is. It's compression combustion using heated air. That's why winter is difficult on them. The up side is no spark plugs, better torque and way better fuel mileage. So, since you have almost 86K miles on the engine now, the "rattle" that you hear is most likely just the engine being cold at start up and then warming quickly as burning fuel heats the engine. Some folks don't like that sound but I think of it as beautiful! A diesel engine will last a long time with proper care and maintenance. Rudolf planned it that way. If it continues to "rattle" after warm up, you might want to have a diesel mechanic check it. Safe travels, Amigo!

The rattle only lasts literally 1 second and then goes away. It doesn't rattle at low rpms during driving, or have any other weird quirks. I just noticed that a couple weeks ago and figured maybe the timing chain & tensioner might need to get replaced.

I know these small diesels are noisy, especially when they're cold.

Yep, they all do.

I realize that this is a couple months old thread. The rattle you are hearing on startup, that sounds like a gasoline engine hydraulic lifter is PROBABLY the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. A fix was released in Europe but not in the US. Expand your search out beyond just this forum and look for LH7 (the RPO code for these diesel engines) timing chain issues and various permutations of the search wording. Ours is going Wednesday to have the timing chain replaced. We just had the EGR cooler, valve and some pipe replaced. It was plugged. I am having a oil catch can installed in the PCV line as these cars get their intake manifold plugged.

If you don't get the timing chain issue taken care of, if it jumps time it will jam a valve through the top of a piston and that will be all she wrote.

Ours is at 109,000 miles.
