I just removed the plastic engine cover on my 2012 3.0 V6 to pinpoint the dull tapping thud.
I narrowed it down to a flimsy plastic component behind the front of engine factory plastic catch can.
This part has what looks like a 5/16 or so plastic vacume hose going to it.
I can change the severity of the tap by wiggling this item.
It is between the firewall & intake.
I thought the high pressure fuel pump was a hard metal item securely bolted to the engine.
This is a wigglable plastic part that is tapping at idle.
Any experts out there?

I just took a few pictures of this part & have a piece of masking tape with a red dot on the part.
I will try to do photos.

The closeup photos are blurry because I had to hold camera too close to get a view around other parts.

SOLVED TAPPING NOISE.

Bought Vacume canister purge valve on Ebay for $30. (Dorman) & installed it in 10 minutes.
Tapping noise gone !!!!!!
Located behind throttle behind where air filter hose connects.

Remove engine cover.
Remove duct & oil vapor plastic jug between air filter & engine

1 10MM. bolt & 1 wire plug & 1 plastic vapor line.
Remove bolt with deep #10 socket 1/4" drive rachet & short extension.
Fish it out between fender & engine to make it easier to remove vapor line & wiring plug.
Quick & easy & no more ticking.
