Could a P0014 and P0442 code be related?

Ever since I purchased this car (2012) it’s been throwing an inconsistent p0442 code. There is an obvious exhaust smell at times coming from the engine area. Then today for the first time it threw a p0014 code. The car periodically has a rough idle but not today. What should I be concerned with and can I handle this issue on my own?

A slow evap leak (P0442) could be anywhere from the gas cap / fuel filler neck, to a tiny leak anywhere in between the fuel tank and intake manifold.

I don't see how the exhaust cam timing code (P0014) could be related to the EVAP situation.

You probably have a blocked PCV orifice which causes heavy oil consumption. And getting low on oil often. When you get low on oil, the oil control valves don’t work properly. That can lead to the P0014. Heavy oil consumption can also lead to a cracked exhaust manifold. The manifold is right in front of the fresh air intake for the cabin so if it’s bleeding exhaust, you will smell it. P0442 is something to do with the EVAP. When you’re pumping gas and it clicks off, do you stuff in more?

PoManNox is correct P0442 is an emission code small leak in the fuel vapor system they can be hard to find, sometimes you need a smoke machine to find the leak. The P0014 is related to the exhaust cam timing only further diag needed there. The Exhaust leak is another issue.

I just started the car with no issues. No noise, no rattling, no shaking. It started right up. I ran the codes and they are all still there (I hadn’t cleared them yet anyways). I’m praying it is just a sensor and low oil issue because I cannot afford a big repair job right now.

So I am hoping to get it repaired today. My mechanic friend and I ran my new obd this morning and I got these:

I can’t afford a big fix so hopefully it is just a matter of replacing the VVT solenoids like the obd recommended. I already have the parts, just need the tools.
