Brake pedal like a rock

I bought a used 2023 Equinox Premium just over a year ago. So far 3 times when I put my foot on the brake to start and it does not move it's like I'm stepping on a rock. I have to push the peddle a couple times to get it to go down. Also on occasion the breaks are very touchy making over sensitive stops. It has just under 30,000 miles what's going on?

Do a search on Google for ”2023 Equinox brake booster TSB” there are several. Check out the TSB that has to do with the brake line rubbing up against the tire. But there are a few that match your description of hard braking/brake booster issues

Took into dealership it had no TSB they also ran a code scan that showed nothing. Guess I wait to see what goes out.

Hey there! That sounds really concerning. The issue where the brake pedal feels like a rock when starting could be due to a few things. One possibility is air in the brake lines. 2023 was the first year for the electronic braking system on the Equinox. They no longer have a vacuum booster, etc. Most vehicles are going this way now due to the fact today's engines produce very little manifold vacuum due to GDI, valve timing and turbo charging. The nice thing about these brakes is it eliminates the need for the cam driven vacuum pump on the 1.5 engine to drive the brake vacuum booster.

Dumb question, but why are you stepping on the brake pedal 3x to start it? Even with vacuum boost brakes, the pedal will stiffen right up by press number 3 if the engine isn't running to pull vacuum on the brake booster.

I assume these new electronic boost brakes are similar, in that you'll only get a 2 presses or so with the engine off before the brake pedal stiffens right up.

The touchy brake thing I don't know. I do know all the collision avoidance stuff will take over the brakes if these systems sense what they feel could be a collision.

Understood.

Could it be that you pressed the brake a time or two after parking and shutting off the engine? That would result in a stiff pedal the next time you get in the vehicle and go to press the brake and start it.

Either which way, hopefully this is just normal for this type of system. Like I say, even the older (up to 2022) vac boost systems will result in a rock hard stiff pedal by press #3 with the engine off.

That’s frustrating—intermittent issues are tough to diagnose. If it happens again, ask them to check the brake hydraulics or booster more thoroughly. Hope it gets sorted soon.

I've had several new vehicles. I've been driving for 55 years. Ever since antilock brakes I've never pumped the brakes.
