I find it somewhat intriguing that someone from the IT business is complaining about software updates and how they are applied? Since the beginning of the IT industry and software developers, there have been software defects and flaws which the IT industry cleverly concealed early-on by calling them "bugs, gremlins and glitches". Modern motor vehicles are plagued with software defects and often poorly designed software and integration, which frustrates vehicle owners and causes massive amounts of vehicle safety recalls and repair trips to the dealer. The defects and recalls are a direct result of incompetent software developers and IT people who think everything must be controlled by a computer or a computer module, and is put in a vehicle without proper testing. A simple and inexpensive repair is no longer feasible. A new module often must be installed (if available) and the system updated or flashed with software at an authorized dealer. A software defect can render a new vehicle undriveable and unsafe. Dealer repair personnel are stumped and baffled, and often don't know how to repair the vehicle's they sell. My wife and I bought a new 2024 Tahoe Premier 4WD and a 2025 Equinox RS AWD. Both are plagued with software defects and are frustrating us with the overly complicated software and its integration, and the lack of repairs by GM. The vehicle software systems are very confusing and frustrating. GM decided to not provide a printed owner's manual for its customers. (No, I don't want to read a 400-page manual on my cell-phone screen!). Some features and options have been made over complicated and not intuitive to the end-user by software developers who think they had to create a new, complicated method to replace a simple command or feature. Our last new Chevrolet purchase before the Tahoe and Equinox was a 2014 Impala 2LTZ. It had a massive number of software defects when new, beginning with the passenger airbag system which malfunctioned on the way home from the dealer after purchase. Repeated trips (and wasted time) to the dealer for the latest update, which often created a new problem - which required another software update. The Equinox has received two over-the-air software updates, but no information on what was changed, added or deleted. After the over-the-air updates, our Equinox was at the dealer yesterday for an AWD system software failure. No software updates available yet and the module is on backorder (failure at 3,1xx miles). I feel for you and your frustration with the multiple dealer trips and lack of repairs or explanation. It has become the standard operating practice for new vehicles and their dealers.
