The rattle you are hearing on startup, that sounds like a gasoline engine hydraulic lifter is PROBABLY the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. A fix was released in Europe but not in the US. Expand your search out beyond just this forum and look for LH7 (the RPO code for these diesel engines) timing chain issues and various permutations of the search wording.  Ours is going Wednesday to have the timing chain replaced. We just had the EGR cooler, valve and some pipe replaced. It was plugged. I am having a oil catch can installed in the PCV line as these cars get their intake manifold plugged. If you don't get the timing chain issue taken care of, if it jumps time it will jam a valve through the top of a piston and that will be all she wrote. Ours is at 109,000 miles.</blockquote>
