There is an older thread on here about the 2.4 engines. Chev knows ther is a problem but no recall so they will replace motors out of warrenty, they just don’t give it out you have to go above the dealers head.
As far as I know they have not, fix one another pops up. To much car not enough engine. I just traded my 2012 2.4 for a 2015 with the V6 now it can merge onto the interstate.
The engine costs more than that even a Recycled from China. He might be rebuilding yours which is what that sounds closer to. The problem with the 2012 is the rings and fuel pump, I just traded mine to keep from arguing with the dealer. A rebuild for $1800 will be worth it if you get another...
