I have found some after market ideas ~ Plasmaglow Fire & Ice Led Mud Flaps - JCWhitney ~ that I might Frankenstein the LEDs into a bowtie configuration and hook it up.. Kinda like the extra brake lights / backup lights worked into the mix....

A few things come to mind:
Malfunctioning injector (s)
Incorrect timing (easy check)
Buildup of carbon in the cylinder (pull your spark plugs [one at a time] and a quick peek might reveal)
These are the leading causes these days for gasoline engines to have a "dieseling" problem.

Compression check should always be performed pre and post head gasket work. Find out if your introducing an issue or bringing to light a previous minor one....
