What is the SD card slot for?

I have a 2020 Equinox AWD Premium. What is the SD Card slot above the wireless charging for? I tried loading a card with MP# files and nothing reads it.

It’s for the dealership to update software.

Actually, it may be used for dealer updates, but for everyday use, I think it's where the navigation maps are stored. I had an intermittent error before, where the navigation map would fail with an error that it was unable to read the SD card. Dealer successfully fixed the issue by replacing the SD reader and the SD card. I was surprised that unlike my other vehicle, it does not store them on a hard drive.
