For fellow members who live in Canada, or those of you visiting from the US, there some new driving laws taking effect July 1, 2025. Keep in mind that there are "some" reciprocal agreements in place between Canadian provinces and US states. Details here:

Key highlights:

The FEDERAL gov't is overriding all provinces in setting these policies. Previously, each province had their own rules, similar to US states. So, no matter where you drive in the country, the rules remain the same.

Distracted driving fines will now start at $600 for first-time offenders, with the possibility of license suspension. The law also expands the definition of distractions to include smart glasses and wrist-wearables, addressing the rise in technology-related driver inattention. It also includes eating, drinking or interacting with in car electronics, such as infotainment units, GPS, among others.

Under the new law, a standardized speed limit of 30 km/h will be enforced 24/7 nationwide in all school zones. Keep in mind that most school zones (at least in my area of Ontario) already have radar speed cameras.

The law introduces AI-powered speed cameras capable of dynamically adjusting monitoring based on traffic flow and time of day.

The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers has been reduced from 0.08 to 0.05.

Mandatory Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) - From July 2025, all new vehicles sold in Canada must be equipped with ADAS technologies, such as lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. For owners of older vehicles, the government will provide retrofit incentives and detailed guidelines to encourage the adoption of ADAS features.

There are other items affecting Commercial drivers etc with more details in the article link.

Pennsylvania has also updated their distracted driving laws effective June 5, 2025. I read that for the first year, police will be giving warnings, then starting June 5, 2026 it will be a $50 fine plus costs. IME, it's those nasty "plus costs" that kill ya.

  • Defines an interactive mobile device as a handheld wireless telephone, personal digital assistant, smart phone, portable or mobile computer, or similar device which can be used for voice communication, texting, emailing, browsing the Internet, instant messaging, playing games, taking or transmitting images, recording or broadcasting videos, creating or sharing social media or otherwise sending or receiving electronic data.

The new law might be a problem for owners of a 2025 Equinox.
If I remember right on the 2025 you have to use the touch screen for some of the basic functions.

That's why i posted this - I recall hearing how some of the climate controls etc are part of the Infotainment. I had a Ford Edge rental and it was similar. Not sure how this will play out as many cars are now doing this

I forgot to update this thread - this was a hoax guys. A very widely spread hoax up here. Funny how the gov't of Canada can say it is stopping misinformation on social media (censor) but cannot do anything about hoaxes like this that a large percentage of the population was exposed to. Oh well, sorry guys

I believe this is taken from a false or fake report. As of Sept. 15, 2025 there is no standard speed limit in school zones. Each municipality or township or city sets the speed limit. I travel through 2 different school zones in Ontario on a regular basis. One zone is 40 km during school hours and days. It is 50 km any other time. The 2nd zone is 40 km 7/24/365. 2 different townships.
