As usual, GM announced the current map update last month at $150 and dropped the price to $100 on May 1st but you must order before the end of June or it goes back to $150.

I haven't updated in a few years and it may be getting close to when GM will no longer update my 2020 so I just ordered the update.

This one is good for the 2019-2024 Equinox with built-in navigation. It does not support anything before the 2019 model year of any GM vehicle.

The 2020 Equinox link: INFO 3 MAP UPDATE - Version 2025 | HERE

And before people start in with how they use their phone app for free and the built-in nav is garbage and they would NEVER waste their money on something like this, good for you. Save your money then.

I have a '24, still under full warranty. Is something like this covered?
You'd have to ask the dealer but I doubt it.

Yet my kid's 2016 Hyundai Sonata still gets free, downloadable map updates that also add features. SMH.

I received the update today and installed it. My biggest interest was whether this update actually showed that a family member's street existed. The last map update from two years previously showed me off-roading when driving up their street. Their home is two years old in a development that was built three years ago.

Yes, their street shows up now but not their exact address. A few addresses near them are listed in the nav system so I guess that'll need to work for now. Interestingly, while Waze can find their address, Google Maps also does not show their home even exists but it does show the same addresses near them. Google Maps Satellite view does not show a single home in the entire development exists, yet there are hundreds built. Neither does Google Street View. Gee, do I now know where HERE gets their data? :)

The paperwork that came with the update states GM INFO3 2025 NAM (24Q1) so I guess this update is a year old already, from the first quarter of 2024. The files on the SD card are dated August 2024.

If only there was a way to tap on the screen to set a waypoint I'd be all set.

Yeah, the dealer confirmed that it's not covered. I rarely use it anyway, so I'll just stick with using Google Maps via Apple CarPlay.

Silly that an update like that isn't covered on a one-year-old car under full warranty.

Checked that site and my 2022 is also $100 - need to find a Canadian site to see if they have a deal, as shipping from US might be pricey.

My question exactly. As mentioned, I use Google Maps via Apple CarPlay. What do I even need this update for, if I don't use the built-in navigation?

If you don't use the built in Navigation there's zero reasons to get a update.
Well, maybe one reason. :)

If you set the DIC, the small rectangular display in the center of the driver dash, so it reads as a digital speedometer it also shows the current speed limit as a sign. That's probably the biggest change I've noticed with this update versus two years ago. Several local streets including some 45 MPH county roads that just showed dashes for the speed limit in the update two years ago now have the actual speed limit shown. Even the street I live on now shows the 25 MPH speed limit as do other streets in the neighborhood. Likely not worth anywhere close to $115 for most people, though.

I didn't realize only people with the built in Navigation had the option to see the speed limit sign on the DIC.

I guess I assumed that part but the update definitely added a bunch of roads that had no speed limit on them previously. I do know a previous update changed some speed limits that were incorrect previously.

I know some vehicles such as a Tesla with Autopilot use their cameras to read the various signs and that is obviously a lot more accurate. And probably more than $115. :)

My 2018 Equinox only shows the speed limit on the main streets in our small town. I think my maps are around 3 years old.
I noticed the built in Nav in my wife's 2025 Blazer shows the speed limit for side streets.

I got my first map SD and the thing was defective. I'm still a bit iffy on the instructions... After inserting the SD card it says to "turn the ignition ON for the vehicle". Does this mean to just hit the ignition button or to start the vehicle?

I always start the car to assure the screen stays powered on. All of the information stays on the SD Card, unlike my old Sonata where the new SD Card actually updated the radio and other things in the car.

When you first insert the new card the radio will inform you that it's about to be locked to that car and ask if you want to proceed. If you agree it writes an identifier to the card, probably the VIN. The Equinox process takes just a second or two. On the Sonata, because it did real firmware updates, I had to leave the car running for 30-45 minutes outside.

But if you get an error message after you agree it usually means the small slide switch on the edge of the SD Card got bumped. That's the "write protect" switch and it keeps the data from being modified. Just slide it the other way and try again.
