My 2025 Equinox dropped out of gear when I was starting to cross a busy four lane city street. The engine roared like it was in neutral and the transmission indicator was in "D". I quickly shifted to '"P" and back into "D" and it then engaged again. The dealership ran diagnostics on it and couldn't find anything. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Which transmission?

Could you have bumped the range selector into neutral, thinking it was in drive?

FWD or AWD operation?

I have an automatic transmission with a column shift that requires pulling the shift lever toward me to change gears. The car was in gear and both hands were on the steering wheel as I waited for traffic to clear. When my opportunity came I accelerated and moved forward, starting to cross two lanes, and that is when the engine roared and the vehicle stopped, even with the gear indicator showing the shift to be in " D". The vehicle is FWD.

The FWD models have a CVT (continuously variable transmission). The AWD models have the traditional 8-speed transmission.

Was there any cross traffic that hadn't quite fully passed through the intersection?

Sometimes I will begin my roll through at an uncontrolled busy four lane intersection, hesitantly at first, because there is still one final car in the furthest lane, that I need to wait for it to pass by. I time it by using the accelerator gently, so I can cross over the first few lanes, and then safely pass behind the final car, before I can step on it and clear the intersection completely, (before the traffic becomes heavy again).
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only experienced driver that has used this method to cross a busy intersection. Driving in busy city traffic you could otherwise sit waiting for the perfect gap in cross traffic, forever.

This is where a human brain can understand exactly what the safe plan is, and the perfect timing of it's execution, but a computer may not fathom what is actually taking place.
So with the accident avoidance system on the 2025 Nox, would the engine continue to rev up as the brake was being applied automatically, as it sensed that final vehicle was coming, and could be a danger?
I've never experienced the computer's safety braking before. I know the brakes will apply automatically but are the engine rpms controlled as well? Does the tranny goes into neutral as part of the accident avoidance feature?
It worries me a bit, as there are times where an accident can be avoided by actually accelerating quickly.

Thanks for your reply, but no the traffic from my left was approaching but not close yet,(the traffic light down the street had just turned green) when I pulled out still slowly waiting for the traffic from the right to completely pass. When I attempted to accelerate to join the traffic from the right, the engine was no longer in gear even though the indicator showed "D". There was no braking feeling just the engine revving, and I hadn't touched the shift.

Best guess is there may be a control adjustment needed. Not sure if the selector is mechanical or completely via wire. If it’s electrical then there should never be an instance where it will pop out of gear on its own.

I’d have a competent tech scan it for codes and see if anything was recorded

The column-mounted shifter lever is electronic, known as an electronic range selector.

The lever is very awkward to use, not intuitive and feels fragile. A slight bump will move the transmission to neutral.

If the vehicle is in park - the lever must be pushed to the left, while the digital readout display shows the “R” (reverse) on the right side of the “P” (park). When the lever is pushed to the left to select reverse, the digital display moves to the right to indicate reverse selection.

I was coming around a blind turn on a winding road when someone came into my lane. I hit the horn as they went by and the engine started to speed up and whine and the car slowed. Does anyone want to guess what happened?
Well when I went to hit the horn I accidentally hit the button that causes the transmission to become a manual transmission. The transmission was in I guess 1st gear and needed to be manually shifted.
