Hello all, I am new to this site. Still have original tires on my 2019 Equinox AWD LT with 48,000 miles. I think I am ready to purchase new tires. I called the tire experts at Tire Rack to discuss possible replacements and they suggested the Bridgestone Ecopia HL 422 Plus. They advised me that they had a set of 4 225/65/17's for about $900 delivered, or it I wanted to use 215/65/17's, the cost was $500 delivered. I asked about any problems using the 10mm narrower tires on the car and they said there would be no problem. Are they correct? I am a senior living on social security and the $400 in savings would make it much easier on my wallet. I did some quick online research but did not find any definitive answer regarding using the narrower tires on the car. Has anyone on here used the 215 width tires and if so, did you have any issues with them? Thanks for your time and response.

My '18 came with those tires. I only got about 25k miles out of them. Very unhappy with them.

Other than the mileage, did you have any other issues with them? And they were the 215/65/17's? I am not so concerned about mileage since I only put about 5000 miles a year on the vehicle.

It's not just the 10mm. The 215/65R17 tire can support less weight per tire at the same pressure as the 225/65R17 and is not recommended as a replacement for the 225/65R17. That's why it's cheaper.

What pressure does the sticker on the driver door jamb say to use?

Load range? Speed rating? Tread-wear number? Do these fit your use? I'd look at these, 10mm seems like splitting hairs honestly. I'd use the 215's in a minute and give it no further thought or concern. Good luck whatever you choose.

Thanks for the response, I was hoping someone would assure me that it is OK.

Do not buy from Tire Rack. Go to a reputable tire dealer, not a Good Year or Bridgestone or other corporate place, in your area. A good tire dealer will explain everything you need to know about tires on Your vehicle in YOUR area of the planet!

Hello,
I would strongly recommend you stick to the manufacturer's 225/65/17 tires, that's what GM decided to put on your Equinox for all aspects of safety, suspension dynamics and handling. Gm know the laws of physics for their cars better than Tire Rack.

I have a 2023 with 110K on it already. (Yeah, I drive a ton which includes driving 3 hours round trip to pick up son every weekend along with Ubering some on the weekends). I have 2 original tires with one cheap new one last November and a used Continental I got from getting screws in them from the Ubering. I plan on replacing all 4, and I am looking at the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 and the Continental Cross Contact. The Pirelli's are about $50 more a tire, but they are 70k mile warranty as opposed to the Continental's warranty at 50k. I have some AS Plus 2 on our Acadia, and they have been outstanding so far after 18 months and 20k miles. I might be doing Continental as they look to have better performance outside of winter handling, which is only a few weeks a year here in Southern Indiana, for the price. Does anyone have any thoughts? I hate looking for tires.

I have run Pirelli tires on many vehicles and feel they are VERY GOOD tires. I live in Minnesota and ran a set of All Weather(different from all season) Pirelli tires on my diesel pickup. I was impressed by their traction in the ice and snow. About 75% of the traction of actual winter tires for the truck. On my cars the Pirelli were just fine for all conditions and they last a very long time. Their tread wear warranty is serious and they will run that 70,000 miles.

I had these on my 2013 Nox and did not like them. Poor wet traction and they did not wear well. You get what you pay for. I stick with Michelins, always good luck with them. If you are a Costco member, check with them. I always get great deals there.

I had bad results with the Ecopia. The sore out at less than 25k miles. When I complained to Bridgestone, they offered to give me a discount on a replacement set. I laughed in their face.

Please go to a tire store that is not a factory store. It really is dangerous to go down 10mm in size. Your handling and steering as well as control during braking can cause a blowout. Just because you only drive 5k a year makes no difference. Should you want to save go to Sam's Club, they give you considerable discounts with mounting, balance and road hazard. They will not sell you anything that is OEM like a good tire store should.

I wish I could tell you putting inexpensive tires that are smaller than the OEM's is OK but I can't. $500 for a set of tires today is a "we need to get rid of these to somebody" price. You may never notice the degradation in braking or handling but they definitely will not last as long as the correct size.

If you are only driving around town, never in the snow, avoid freeway driving, then the $500 tires will work.
If you do freeway driving then make sure the speed rating is appropriate, if on snow make sure they are not just summer tires but M&S or whatever the current rating is for all season.
