Hey all!! I am a novice with technical work on vehicles.

I have recently acquired a 2019 Equinox Premier AWD. It supposedly has transmission problems so I took it on as a project. Here's the specs: 2.0 (LTG) engine, 9T50 (M3D) AWD transmission.

I have a complete tablet bidirectional/coding scanner with J2534 passthrough VCI, telemetry, etc., TechLine Connect subscription with SPS2, and a separate VCXnano J2534 passthrough. I also have a toner for looking for wiring issues.

When I got started with it, the AGM battery in it was toast as the car sat for months. After removing the battery a charge "repair mode" it only held 4v. Got a new battery for it, and it started right up. When it got new life, it had all the U DTCs like lost comms to all the modules, low voltage DTCs, etc. Also present was a permanent P0747, solenoid stuck open.

Let it idle for about half an hour. Cleared codes. Test drive indicated the "only 5th gear" symptom, no reverse. I could send command to clear P0747 but it's permanent and will only clear with a successful 6th to 7th gear shift. However, after clearing it would shift from 1 to 5 like normal, then bog down and back to 5 and then remain in 5.

SO, since it is a project and trying to learn more, I wanted to work it step by step. Acquired a new solenoid control body, and replaced it. I pulled the battery, pulled the ECM, pulled the charge pipe, pulled the under hood fuse box (pulled these for top access as well as bottom, this operation was done at home without a lift). I knew I would need to program the part specific number of the solenoid body into the TCM via SPS2. Did a drain and fill in the transmission too.

Herein lies the problem now. While carrying the TCM from workbench to the engine compartment, I dropped it on the floor. I didn't worry too much about it as I had dropped one before and it worked fine afterwards. Once I put everything back together, the vehicle was showing "shift to park" and will crank forever and no start. Then I noticed the sunroof wouldn't close, the interior dome lights don't work (only the one just inside the back hatch illuminates), rear hatch button on the gate itself doesn't open the handsfree lift gate, etc. I start to think, BCM issues too when I didn't even touch that module at all? DTC present for No Communication with TCM. Circuit issue with the wiring? TCM a link in the wiring to BCM from ECM? ECM junk? Got salvage ECM, plugged it in before I knew about Global A system. No start, saw a lot of things were wrong like displayed outdoor temp, immobilizer light, etc. Did some research, found out about Global A, put original ECM back in and this is it's current state.

Schematics look like a foreign language to me most of the time. I plan to start digging/tracing/etc. Also to note, the gear shift selector is in park, stepping on brake to release the gear shifter lock solenoid does nothing.

Part of me first wants to SPS reprogram ECM since I read about the do not swap modules. Then reprogram BCM, then see maybe what to do with TCM if it comes back after programming of ECM/BCM?

Any pointers from anyone? This is a mess but I have time to work through it as this is just a spare project car. I also will welcome any constructive criticism, etc. I can't actually learn with my ego in the way!

Thanks all!

Was it the original TCM you dropped? I'd be tempted to source a used unit and see if it results in the same thing. I realize a used one would require programming.

Yep. Original TCM was dropped. SPS2 last night had a successful ECM program with the same parameters. Then I went to BCM and it couldn't complete the programming because the car thinks it is not in Park since it shows shift to park.

I forgot to mention: since it is stuck in shift to park it won't power down on its own either. Have to pull the negative battery cable to turn the car off all the way.

Forgot to mention 2: The U0101 code is present in the ECM as well as the BCM when I enter each module directly via telemetry on the scanner. That is what made me think the TCM is in a chain from ECM to BCM.

Forgot to mention 3: 20A fuse for the TCM in the interior cabin fuse block near the DataLink connector is good, but has no power to it on either side. The 20A fuse for the TCM in the engine compartment fuse block for the TCM is good and does have power.

Already got a used TCM sourced and picking it up in a couple hours. Going to follow the replacement procedure to the T on SPS2. I'll advise sometime later tonight or tomorrow what the results are.

Maybe it will bring back the BCM to full duty cycle!

Well, used TCM obtained. Plugged it in. No go. Still U0101. Tried to program anyways as suggested since the VIN didn't match, it failed both replace transmission and replaced solenoid body. BCM still shows U0101 as well.

Time to start tracing tonight or tomorrow!

Update: I took a few days off from the Weakuinox. This morning I probed the K71 Connector that attaches to the TCM. I went thru and verified I had ground, power, correct voltage GMLAN positive/negative, etc. All checked out OK. So I paused for a moment because I sat back down in the driver's seat and noticed my dome lights were operational again, sunroof and the sunshade were finally able to be closed, lift gate worked, etc.

I decided okay, well the BCM is fully awake now. I immediately got out and put the connector right onto the TCM. The "Shift to Park" display was no longer there. Shift Lever solenoid worked, and I was able to run the full range of the shifter. I'm like GOLDMINEEE.

Went to start it, crank no start.... 😑😑😑

Now I have a P135A-00 code for Ignition Coil Supply Voltage Circuit - Bank 1.

Going to work thru that diag/hopeful repair sometime in the next couple days.

UPDATE: I followed the service & diagnostic information available on Lemon for DTC P135A with grounding PCM X1 harness connector terminal 67, which flipped the ECM relay for troubleshooting, etc. Followed it exactly and all checked okay.

Pulled fuse 16, tested it for 12v, checked the under hood fuse box connector for continuity, resistance, and 12v.

All checked okay. Put everything back together and slapped the blue ECM connector back on and connected the battery.

Started right up. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The saga continues on.
