I have disassembled a 2017 Equinox 2.4L engine to replace intake vavles bent by a timing chain slip. Other than replace the timing setup and intake valves are there any more "must do" tasks I should address while disassembled? Will do intake valve seals, piston rings and connecting rods bearings as well. I don't see any other damage to engine components. Vehicle has 160K miles. Charlie

Good for you in taking this on. This is one of those jobs that would be completely cost prohibitive to have to hire out.

I don't have any recommendations other than Watch Wes Work posted a really good video series not that long ago on a 2.4L Equinox engine rebuild. These are not cheap engines to rebuild. I'd pay particular attention to the pressed on cam timing tone ring on the cam and make sure it's oriented properly. Can't remember if it's intake or exhaust cam..

Obviously use known good brand replacement parts for what that's worth. We all know how replacement parts can go today..

Keep us posted on your progress if you can!

Are you going to re-ring what you have or do whole new piston assemblies? I know on GM turbo 4's the weak spot is the ring land areas tend to crack. As far as I know, GM only sells complete piston assemblies for those.

If/when you take off the exhaust manifold, clean the EGR ports between the exhaust ports.

Thanks, assume you are talking about the exhaust passages inside the head. If so, have wire brushed them clean, Yes, replacing rings. Not a turbo.

Going through the last steps and have an issue. The Haynes manual says the timing chain torsioner has to be retracted before being screwed into the back of the engine, looks like it should be about 2.5 inches into the block, not counting the head. The ones I have are 2 7/8. Have tried to get the interior snap ring off to retract it, haven't won that battle. Advice?
