I have had my Equinox for almost 3 mos and it has about 4200 miles. According to Onstar records, I do not have any maintenance scheduled for another 8000 miles, but I recently received an e-mail from the dealer stating the vehicle is due for maintenance now. I have checked the manuals and the schedule information is a bit confusing to me. Can someone please clear this up for me. Thanks.

Its up to you when you change it, but sounds like your dealer is going by 5k which is not what GM recommends. It comes down to what you are comfortable with, GM recommends you follow the OLM (oil life monitor), some locations/dealers will still recommend 3-5k. On my company cars, since 2006 I have used the OLM and never had an issue. Usually range is 7-9k miles, on my personal car I have never followed that, but its mainly due to my driving style. Once this engine is broken in, I plan on going to 7500+

I am the same way.. I will stretch out the OLM on my Diesel GM truck and probably get about 15k miles to 10 qts and Rotella oil... I will be switching to amsoil next go around!

On my Equinox I think that I have been going about 6000-7000 miles.

This is a good question and I have read alot about it on the truck forum. I have come to the conclusion that the Oil Life Monitor that GM built into our vehicles is VERY accurate and there for a reason. But I still try to change the oil in the Equinox and Silverado around every 5K miles. We are not hard on our vehicles and could still go alot longer. I was thinking about this today and thought I'd bring back this old thread on the subject to see what others thought.

5000 miles is were I will be changing the oil, I do know that the DI motors seem to be a little harder on the oil then a regular fuel injected motor.

Can the OLM sense between regular oil and synthetic? I know the new GM "standard" oil is part synthetic, but can it adjust for mileage between that and using let's say Mobil 1?

I do mine every 5K, because I rotate tires at the same time,
makes it a LOT easier to remember just doing them together.

I personally do not believe that there is any difference at all.. I have only ever used Mobil 1 in my car until here recently that I switched over to Amsoil Synthetic Oils.

Thanks for the reading all. I bought a 2011 Equinox in May and still pondering this oil change question...do I do it at 5K (liek I have doen every other vehicle I have ever owned? ....or ....using the synthetic and the oil life monitor, do I wait until 12K miles like it is telling me???

Of course the dealer is saying 5K, but I am assuming they want the service money.

Any new thoughts anyone?

What I did and would do again.
1 st oil change at 1000 miles then at 4000 miles then every 5000 miles.
Just me.
I did find some metal in the filter on the first oil change.
I posted pictures in my post on how to change the oil.
