I didn't avoid the sand, just kept a reasonable speed through the softer sections. The AWD and all-terrain tires worked quite well for these scenarios. Ground clearance was the real limiting factor. I turned back a couple of times when the rocks got too big or the trail too rutted.
P0010 and P0011 usually mean one of the two the Variable Valve Timing solenoids are going bad. I had intermittent CEL and stalling issues. I replaced both solenoids for about $110 (easy DIY job). Solved the problem.
