'11 Equinox 1LT V6 1200 miles: Alarm Goes Off For No Reason

Happened at 7:40am this morning, broad daylight, sitting in the driveway. No apparent vandals, nothing seemed wrong. I was in the kitchen behind two walls with the keyfob in my pocket, so I don't think it was an accidental PANIC button push. The horn honked about 20 times with the lights ON before it all stopped. I couldn't seem to stop it using the remote.

1.) Anybody had this happen to them? Is there a way to silence it immediately? I STILL haven't sat down to read the owner's manual yet.

2.) Any chance this could've been caused by someone else's remote or even OnStar?

Our remotes have a VERY long range (atleast mine does)...I have accidentally actived the "alarm" a few times on the nox

As for stopping it with the remote...I usually hit the alarm button again

I've set our alarm off a couple of times if I have the key FOB in my pocket and lean up against something. Definitely a long range on these things.

I'm going to see if I can make it happen again this weekend, standing in the same place in the kitchen, doing exactly what I was doing - making my lunch for the workday. The keyfob was in my pocket and I was standing up against the end of the kitchen counter facing in the opposite direction to where the driveway is. Plus, there were TWO house walls between me and the car.

I can't see how it could've happened, but I'll give a try...

I bet not.

What I hate is the key flips out in my pocket and then pocks me in the leg.

Key problems

I have a 6 month old 2011 equinox ltz. I have problems with the key all the time. At a certain friends house, the key is totally disabled. I have to manually lock or unlock car.
I have started the car with the key, placed it in the ignition, and it locked me out of the car, car running. Luckily I was at home and was able to use other key to manually open the door.
My alarm button does not seem to stop the alarm either. I have had to place the key in ignition to stop.
Just a few of the many problems I think are associated with the computer.

That's what's causing it. I did it again leaning up against the kitchen counter a few weekends ago. I've since replaced my keyring with a larger one and it hasn't happened since. The smaller ring kept the heads of the keys too tight to the alarm button (which is in a bad location).

Also, I'll 2nd the complaint about the key popping out of the keyfob while it's in your pocket. Another bad idea by GM. They should've just kept the key and keyfob separate. I'd really rather not carry the keyfob. It's too big and fairly useless. All mine does is open the doors and sound the alarm. Incredibly, it doesn't even have an unlock button for the liftgate!! Is that STUPID, or what? Who are the idiots who design these things???

Does the key fob not unlock the key fob when you press unlock button twice???

I'm not sure ... it probably does ... but I want a single button for the liftgate (like I have on my Impala for the trunk) that pops the thing open ... so that you don't have to fight with that stupid touchpad thing (can't stand that). My son has to take his bass out of the back every morning and he can never seem to open the liftgate cleanly using that stupid touchpad. Then, he overslams the liftgate closed because if he doesn't, I get the "LIFTGATE OPEN" message and have to jump out to close it myself as he's walking away!!!

They should've just used a standard liftgate latch. The one on my Taurus has been there for 14 years now. No problems.

Again, who are the idiots who come up with this stuff???

You get a button with the LTZ model for the auto lift gate. But I know what you mean about having to sometimes slam it to get it closed right. I had issues with mine at first. It seemed to get easier the more it was used. I don't even think about it now.

Key was sitting on nightstand and alarm goes on

Here I am sitting in the 2012 Equinox we rented at 5:49am trying to figure out why the alarm is goeing on for no reason. We are on vacation and visiting family in a quiet neighborhood when for no aparent reason the alarm goes on at 5:20 am! The key was sitting on the nightstand and everyone was sleeping so it wasn't accidentally pushed. I turned it off and then it went on again 5 minutes later. It also went on yesterday when in the driveway of another family member we were visiting. This is an annoying problem that I would like to fnd a solution to.

Have you tried manually locking the doors and not setting the alarm?

Did you ever find out what was causing the horn to go off like that? I just bought a 2012 Equinox two days ago, and my horn would not stop going off as I drove the car. So, I took it back to the dealer today and they're trying to find out what the problem could be..

2011 Equinox

Same here. The alarm in my 2011 Equinox goes off for no reason. The keys are sitting on a table, untouched. It doesn't seem to matter if the dorrs are locked or unlocked. The key fob won't shut it off, the only thing that works is starting the engine. Very frustrating!!
