looking to buy a awd equinox

Hello, just thought I would do some homework. My wife wants a small suv that gets around good in the winter. I know nothing about these vehicles. What can I expect if we buy one. She found a 2005 awd with 133k. Looks clean. Thanks for any help

I would just be looking for carfax and service records. There's not a lot to look for when they are well maintained. I personally would be just as confident with a front wheel drive model as a AWD. The ultimate deciding factor is that increased maintenance and repairs and decreased fuel mileage...

So overall they are mechanically solid.? If the owner has records what ones should I look for are they known for timing belts? Water pumps etc

Awd drive known for more issued than just a 2wd? I think the wife would feel more confident I a 4x4 and a awd for our crap winter roads

No, they aren't like Honda's... That's for sure. The equinox has a timing chain. Anytime you have a vehicle with additional features than others can always mean more problems. I've lived in the snow belt of Northeast Ohio for most of my life. I always had a 2wd truck or FWD car.

Ask for service records. If they have a folder with service records, there is a pretty good chance that it was well taken care of and it will be a good vehicle.

One thing to look for is to make sure the transmission and transfer case fluids are in good shape. If it was not properly maintained then you will have issues down the road for sure. My mom has a 2008 AWD and loves it. I had the transmission serviced for her with a complete fluid exchange and filter change at 48k and it was nasty. The dealer couldn't get over how bad it was. She lives in the mountains of PA so it shifts a good bit.

To me keeping the drive train fluids changed if not running synthetic is important. Most overlook them. I'm not a fan of what the manufactures recommend that they can go 100k. More like every 30k on conventional fluid and 50k on synthetic to get the most out of you vehicle.
