Ok, I am new to the 3.4

I am VERY familiar with the 3.8 from GM though. In the 3.8 community there is a huge debate on the whole DEX Cool and gasket issue. It is VERY rare to have a head gasket failure, but it is quite common to have a bad upper intake manifold as the ones in the 3.8 NA are plastic :yucky:and a failed LIM gasket.

Normally this is resolved by a new upper and a metal gasket.

I have heard nightmares about the 3.4 and the head gasket though and heard of issues with the coolant. I was actually advised to drain it an replace it.

So, what's the consensus here on this issue?

I think that my Dad has this engine in his 2001 Chevy Malibu and it has almost 200k miles and the dealer is claiming it will last another 150k... We will see about that but think draining is the answer here since it needs to be done at 100k anyways.

I think I am like you. Change it sometimes even if I know it was done before. I feel more secure if I do things correctly with the fluid of choice.

We just bought a new diesel truck for the business and I am changing the oil at 1000 miles. I want to get the factory oil out and replace it with some amsoil.

i know that older 3.4 was efected by dexcool cooland! as the gasket was not adopted to it. but we have newer 3.4 with different intake system. i heard about that some of noxes steel surfers from head gasket leaking. but its pretty easy job to change DIY.

the real problem is the upper intake gasket. its pretty common to leak oil to intake manifold.

i'v changed my coolant before winter. its easy DIY. the hardest is to get out air from system.

Don't get me started about getting air out of the system. I battled with that with my. 3.8 for months LOL
